General info:

Driving in Taiwan can be an enjoyable and convenient way to explore the country. Here are some suggestions and tips to make your driving experience smoother, including dealing with signs in a different language:

  1. Check your International Driving Permit (IDP): Obtain an IDP before traveling to Taiwan. This permit, along with your valid driver’s license from your home country, will allow you to drive legally in Taiwan.

  2. Familiarize yourself with traffic rules: Research and familiarize yourself with Taiwan’s traffic rules and regulations to ensure a safe driving experience. Traffic follows the right-hand side of the road, and speed limits are generally posted in kilometers per hour.

  3. GPS or Navigation System: Rent a car with a built-in GPS system or consider using a navigation app on your smartphone.

  4. English Signs: While most major roads and highways in the major cities have signs in both Chinese and English, this might not be the case if you are driving in the countryside. Make sure to understand the general driving rules in Taiwan before deciding to rent a car.

  5. Offline Maps: Download offline maps of Taiwan or specific regions to ensure that you can access navigation even in areas with limited internet connectivity.

  6. Tolls and Expressways: Be aware that Taiwan has a well-developed network of expressways, and some sections may require toll payment. Keep some cash or an electronic toll payment card (such as an ETC card) handy for convenience.

  7. Parking: Look for designated parking areas or parking garages in cities and tourist spots. Pay attention to parking regulations and avoid parking in restricted areas to avoid fines or towing.

  8. Traffic in Taiwan can be fast-paced, especially in urban areas. Stay alert, be patient, and anticipate the actions of other drivers.

  9. Road Conditions: Check for road conditions and any potential construction or detours before embarking on your journey. Online resources or mobile apps can provide real-time traffic updates.

  10. Take Breaks: Plan for regular breaks during long drives to rest, stretch, and explore attractions along the way. Taiwan has many scenic spots, rest areas, and local eateries worth exploring.

  11. Price for a rental car starts from 2500TWD per day;
